Computer Information

WEP

Wireless equivalent protocol (WEP) is an older security standard that is largely being replaced by WPA (Wi-Fi). Upgrades are available for the firmware on some routers. You can access this information at the manufacturer's website. If you have a wireless LAN and have not secured your network with either WEP or WPA your network is vulnerable.

Firewalls

Windows XP comes with a firewall built into the operating system. For more information see the Microsoft website. There are many software vendors with client firewall packages. Additionally, many routers have firewalls built into the hardware. These typically don't have the "header" sniffing capability found in software firewalls. Some have the NAT "Network Address Translation" that allow the router to "spoof" the computers IP address. This makes your computer less vulnerable.
